December Christmas Shopping

Author’s note: I got a comment from a woman, who said she was a Black business entrepreneur. She said she believed in what King and The Honorable Louis Farrakhan were saying, but she did not think Black entrepreneurs should be boycotted. So, I read the quotes from King and Farrakhan again, and I noticed that Martin Luther King did not say anything about race.

King said, “We are God’s children, and you are not treating us right, and we’ve come by here to ask you to make the first item on your agenda fair treatment, where God’s children are concerned. Now, if you are not prepared to do that, we have another agenda that we must follow, and our agenda calls for withdrawing economic support from you.”

The purpose of the boycott is to get better treatment from any business that discriminates and does not treat “God’s children right.” God’s children can be any human being, but King is probably talking to a predominantly Black audience, and it is not likely that Black people would be discriminating against Black people or any race of people. If Black people get boycotted, would that not defeat the purpose of the boycott? We probably should do business with Black people as much as possible. For poor people, a boycott is probably the most effective way of getting better treatment. There may be a few bad apples, but I doubt that Black people would on the whole, be treating Black people badly, and also, supporting Black businesses is generally a good, important act Black people can take.

Suggestions:

  1. My mother grew up during the Great Depression. She was born in 1927, and she was one of 8 children. However her parents did celebrate Christmas, and when my mother was a child she would be very happy to get an orange or an apple in her sock, she hung up to get a present from Santa, at Christmas time.

  2. Highlight Kwanza a Black holiday festivity. Give sales discounts to customers, during Kwanza.

  3. If you feel a Black business is not treating you right, then write to the owner an email, or letter, and explain the problem to him or her. If the problem still persists, take your business somewhere else, preferably another Black business, but if you can’t find another Black business, then go to another race, that treats you better.

  4. Parents, talk to your children and them Santa is not a real man, but the “Spirit of Christmas.” In the 4th grade I had a teacher who one day walked into class and simply told us Santa was a myth, but she said Santa embodies “the spirit of Christmas.” I really never had a beef with Santa. I think of Santa as being the spirit of Christmas, and I do not think of spirits as being a particular color. I think Santa has a sense of humor. I honestly think he roots for poor people all over the world to boycott him, and not go deeper in debt, just to give gifts.

  5. I have revised my cartoon, to make Santa Black. I think whatever race the children, Santa ought to be in their own image.

Finally, if anybody else has any other suggestions or comments, then they would be appreciated. I may not necessarily print them, but I will read them. Thank you.
